Bed & Mattress Guarantees & Warranties – What do they mean?
The most reassuring thing about buying a branded bed or mattress from a reputable retailer is the guarantee and warranty that comes with it. Isn’t it great to be comfortable in the knowledge that your investment is protected? After all you can spend £000’s on a bed. But what is a guarantee and warranty and how do most of them work?
Guarantee
The guarantee or guarantee period means that if the divan bed or mattress fails due to proven manufacturing fault or defect during this time, the replacement is free. Some companies will make a charge for the delivery of the replacement. The longer the guarantee, the more confident you can be of the quality of the bed or mattress. There is no doubt that the handmade luxury Hypnos beds and Hypnos mattresses are manufactured to the very highest standards. Since November 3rd 2014 they give a Hypnos 10 year guarantee on all products. Hypnos really were the trend setters with decent guarantees. They put pressure on other divan bed and mattress manufacturers to up their game. Following there lead you now get an 8 years guarantee on Dunlopillo mattresses and beds, 8 years on Relyon mattresses and beds and 5 years on Sealy mattresses and beds to name a few.
Warranty Period
If a manufacturing fault appears during the warranty period of the guarantee, the manufacturer will only pay a certain percentage of the repair or replacement, with the customer paying the rest. The customer is often expected to pay the delivery costs during the warranty period.
The charge will reflect the period of use, the current retail price and the number of years left on the warranty. In the case of a 10 year warranty on a divan bed or mattress, there's generally a one year guarantee and 9 year warranty. If the bed fails after 4 years the charge is calculated at 40% of the current retail price plus delivery/installation charges. After 8 years the customer’s contribution would be 80%. However fewer of our suppliers offer a warranty. they have seen the light and offer full guarantees.
You should be aware that all guarantees are void if a fault results from misuse of the product.
Under the law, the Contract of Sale exists between the retailer and the consumer. Consequently, if you have cause to complain, please contact your retailer giving proof of purchase and outlining the nature of your complaint. If the guarantee and warranty conditions have been satisfied, the retailer will then liaise with the manufacturer on your behalf. As shopping for beds and mattresses online has become more common place, our suppliers are generally happy to appoint independent assessors to carry out and inspection of a faulty product. This is most useful as it would be difficult for us to view a faulty product in Manchester as we are based in Sussex.
